SEVERE FLOODING
Date & Time: Sunday, April 15, 2007 – Tuesday, April 17, 2007
Location: Lawrence Township, N.J.
Details: A powerful Nor’easter swept into New Jersey and dropped more than 5 inches of rain on the Mercer County region beginning late on Saturday, April 14, and continuing throughout much of Sunday, April 15. Widespread flooding was the result. Numerous local roads, including parts of Route 1, were left under water for several days. Hundreds of homes throughout the county suffered flooded basements and other water problems. Between 4:33 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, and 7:37 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, the dedicate volunteers of Lawrence Road Fire Co. responded to a total of 49 emergency calls for service. Ten alarms were received on Sunday, 28 came in on Monday, and 11 were received on Tuesday. Of these 49 alarms, 31 were dewatering assignments, six were for fire alarm activations, five were for smoke conditions, four were water rescues, two were accidents and one was a vehicle fire. The dewaterings involved firefighters pumping anywhere from just a few inches to well over a foot of water from flooded basements and crawl spaces. In each case, firefighters checked the integrity of each home’s utilities and, in some cases, turned off power as a precaution. The four water rescues involved vehicles that became stranded in flood water. But in each case, vehicle occupants were able to get to safety on their own.
