Lawrence Township firefighters were busy enjoying Halloween with their families when Box 23-10 was suddenly transmitted and all three township fire companies were dispatched for an accident with possible entrapment and fire. Lawrenceville Fire Co. Chief Ray Nagy arrived on scene at 6:37 p.m. to find that a Pontiac Sunfire that had been traveling southbound on Lawrence Road had veered off the roadway near the corner of Monroe Street, hopped the curb, crossed a front lawn, and slammed into some shrubbery and the front porch of the home at 2467 Lawrence Road. The spinning wheels of the car generated a lot of smoke that made it seem the vehicle was burning, however there was no fire found. The car’s driver, a 29-year-old Pennsylvania man, was not trapped but allegedly tried to drive the damaged vehicle away and refused to open his door when police approached him. Police had to break the driver’s window open to get the man out of the car. After he was treated at a Trenton hospital for minor injuries, the man was charged with driving under the influence, resisting arrest and failure to maintain a lane, according to police. Rescue 22’s crew helped secure the damaged car’s battery and check the interior of the house for structural damage. Damage was found to be limited to a small area of the front porch. A fan from Engine 21-1 was used to remove from the home’s basement the smoke that had been generated by the car’s spinning tires. Rescue 22’s light tower was also used to illuminate the scene for police. Rescue 22 was back in quarters by 7:13 p.m.
