FATAL ACCIDENT WITH ENTRAPMENT

Date & Time: Monday, June 2, 2008 – 10:57 a.m.

Location: Interstate 95 North near Exit 8B (Princeton Pike), Lawrence Twp, N.J.

Details: Rescue 23 from Lawrenceville Fire Co., Rescue 22 from Lawrence Road Fire Co., and Rescue 21 from Slackwood Fire Co. were dispatched, along with emergency medical personnel, Lawrence Township police and New Jersey state troopers, to Interstate 95 on the report of a vehicle off the road with possible entrapment. Crews arrived to the vehicle into the trees near the fence separating the interstate from the office complex at 3131 Princeton Pike. The vehicle had sustained a tremendous amount of damage. The driver, an 18-year-old woman, and one of her two passengers, a 20-year-old man, were both killed in the crash. The other passenger, a 16-year-old male, was badly injured and had to be extricated from the wreckage by firefighters. A medevac helicopter was requested but it was later cancelled and the teenager, once freed, was rushed to the trauma center at Capital Health System at Fuld hospital. Engine 12 from Mercerville Fire Co. was special-called to the scene at 11:12 a.m. to help search the woods surrounding the accident scene because it was originally feared that a fourth person might have been traveling in the car and ejected upon impact. Ultimately, the searches proved negative and it was determined that only three people had been in the vehicle. After extricating the 16-year-old, firefighters freed the other victims from the wreckage to aid the Mercer County Medical Examiner’s Office. Rescue 22 was back in quarters by 12:11 p.m. The officers and members of Lawrence Road Fire Co. offer their condolences to the families of the deceased and wish the survivor a full and speedy recovery.
